The Best Coffee Shops in Oslo, Norway: Two Cafés I'd Return to Again and Again

If there's one thing I look for whenever I visit a new city, it's finding a good coffee shop. Not because I'm a coffee snob (although my husband would probably disagree), but because I have found that cafés often tell you more about a place than any guidebook ever could. They are where people catch up with friends after work, read a book on a rainy afternoon or simply pause for ten minutes before carrying on with their day. So, when I found myself in Oslo, Norway, I knew exactly where I wanted to start.

Exploring Grünerløkka

Both Tim Wendelboe and Supreme Roastworks are tucked away in Grünerløkka, a neighbourhood that quickly became my favourite part of Oslo. It has a relaxed, creative feel, it’s full of independent shops, bakeries, & it just has a really cool vibe. It was one of those bright summer days where the city was full of life, and it didn't take long before I understood why Oslo has such a brilliant coffee reputation.

The queue outside Tim Wendelboe stretched down the street. Normally, I might think twice about waiting, but I didn’t. I waited in line for 25 minutes and let me tell you, it was worth it! There was something exciting about standing in line with everyone else, chatting quietly, people-watching and wondering whether the coffee could really be as good as everyone said. It was. I ordered a double-shot latte, and without exaggerating, it was one of the best coffees I have ever had.

While I was waiting, I noticed people being served coffee in martini glasses, which I thought was such a fun detail. It summed up the café perfectly. Thoughtful, a little different and completely confident in what it does.

Supreme Roastworks

After reluctantly leaving Tim Wendelboe, I wandered over to Supreme Roastworks, which was only a short walk away. The atmosphere felt different but just as welcoming. I ordered a cortado for my husband and Latte for me, along with a cinnamon bun and a custard pastry, and honestly, I could have happily stayed there all afternoon. Luckily I wasn't in any rush, so I enjoyed the coffee, the incredible pastries and that lovely feeling of discovering somewhere you will definitely return to one day.

Why I Always Seek Out Local Coffee Shops

Whenever I travel, I don't just remember the mountains, the famous landmarks or the places everyone tells you to visit. I remember the cafés! One of my favourite things in life is to enjoy a coffee and a pastry, it’s one of my favourite ways to slow down and relax. I notice the little things in life, The conversations happening around me, the music playing quietly in the background, the light coming through the windows and the rhythm of everyday life. As a photographer, I think that's probably why I'm drawn to them, they are full of stories to capture!

Tim Wendelboe for one of the best coffees I've ever tasted and an experience that's worth queuing for.

Supreme Roastworks for incredible pastries, beautifully made coffee, friendly staff and great atmosphere.

Sometimes the best way to get to know a city isn't by ticking off the biggest attractions. Sometimes it's simply finding a great café, ordering a coffee and watching the world go by. If you ever find yourself in Grünerløkka, I'd recommend doing exactly that.
